HypnoBirthing®

"It is not only that we want to bring about an easy labor, without risk of injury to the mother or the child; we must go further. We must understand that childbirth is fundamentally a spiritual, as well as a physical achievement..." so wrote Grantly Dick-Read, the English philosopher who through his work in obstetrics returned to women the gift of their right to truly giving birth naturally.

Like most parents-to-be, much of your thinking is given over to your special baby whom you are carrying and for whose birth you are preparing. It is important to take the time to reflect on how very special you are and how very special your feelings are about the changes that are taking place in your life. What you are experiencing is unique. No matter how many children you have had, this pregnancy will bring forth a child so unique! so special! Birthing is nature characterized at its best and you are at the heart of this wonderful miracle.

HypnoBirthing®, an alternative prenatal program, is based on the belief that only the mind can think and the body will respond accordingly - no pain exists, therefore, no pain is experienced. The program is based on the fact that self-hypnosis comes from learning to reach that level of mind where suggestions that are self-given effectively influence the physiological experience by dispelling fear, tension and discomfort during labor. Birthing is filled with reassured expectation and confidence, profound relaxation, total awareness and trusting that the body will function as it intended to - assisting rather than resisting. Mothers and their birthing companions are explained how the uterus functions. It is important to devote time and space to this topic because of its relationship to fear and pain. Mothers are taught that the uterus is composed of three layers. The outer layer are muscles that are vertical and the inner layers, the muscles are circular. When the birthing mother is in a comfortable state of relaxation, the two sets of muscles work in harmony, as they were intended to - the surge of the vertical muscles will flex and expel; while the circular muscles will open and draw back - thus allowing birthing to proceed smoothly and easily.

Fear -- one of the strongest emotions -- is a villain in the labor room. When we experience stress, the messages sent to our body bring about exaggerated and distorted reactions thus creating physiological and chemical changes within the body - so that we immediately experience "fight or flight" response. In the case of a laboring mother, neither "fight" nor "flight" are appropriate options because they cause tension in the muscles within the uterus and everywhere else. We know that the group of hormones called catecholamine is released in concentrated proportions when a mother approaches birthing with unresolved fear. In the HypnoBirthing® program, mother and birthing companion are taught how to identify emotional stress before and during labor and are taught how to bring on a continuous and deepening relaxation. With confidence and free of fear, mothers can bring themselves into a calm, relaxed state from the very onset of labor. The birthing companion lends support, with verbal and physical cues that have been practiced, so that the constricting hormones are overridden by the body's natural relaxant and pain killer - endorphins. Endorphins produce a tranquil condition because they suppress pain sensations.

Relaxation, self-hypnosis, and guided imagery taught in the HypnoBirthing® program create a path to the center of the subconscious and tap the natural tranquilizers, thus alleviating the pain-causing catecholamine before it starts.

It is important to keep in mind that contractions do not have to hurt. They are energy rushes that enable the birthing of your unique baby.

HypnoBirthing® is your guide to achieving an easier and more comfortable birthing in the way that most mirrors nature.
