What is Hypnosis?
First, what is the definition of hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of superior
consciousness which allows us to reach the unconscious and influence it in
order to modify behavior problems such as phobias, shyness, numerous other
psychological ailments, and to improve people's life.
It is a
alternate state of consciousness, concentrated but calm and passive. In a state of
hypnosis, the subject is conscious although his mobility is reduced to a minimum.
He has all his faculties and it would be an error to bring him to the point
where he would be unconscious because the therapist's need is to keep him awake to establish
communication and give him suggestions. Moreover, we should never forget that
the subject has the possibility of extracting himself from a trance unilaterally.
The induction is the process by which we bring the patient
into a trance. He is either progressively relaxed or directed into a trance by
a more authoritarian technique. This depends upon his temperament, attitude, fears
and confidence towards the therapist. Generally, his expectations play a large
and important role in his response to hypnosis.
The trance is the state when the subject is
hypnotized: total muscular relaxation, slowness of mental processes but
amplified ability to recall memories.
Quite often the patient is so conscious that he doesn’t
believe that he has been hypnotized. Moreover, the notion of time doesn’t exist
and as he comes out of a trance he is surprised by the amount of time he has
been under hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a concentration of consciousness. It is not sleep.
But resistance is lessened and this allows the patient to say things he could
not say in full consciousness. He frees himself from a problem without having it
go through the conscious mind.
The practitioner brings the subject into a
state of total relaxation which assists suggestion assimilation and then
treats him to alter disabling behaviors.
The power and depth of the hypnosis relaxation are ideal
instruments in fighting stress and all sorts of mental problems. In industry, it opens the door to treating
burn-outs and improving workers’ productivity, thus saving a company all the
vast numbers of missed days and sick leaves.
Medically, hypnosis applies a very powerful local
anesthetic. Painless natural birthing is effective, especially if the
expectant mother has
followed a few weeks of training before her due date. But similarly to
acupuncture, medicine is slow to show faith on a large scale to this
technique, although dentists are more open to the process.
Generally, all psychosomatic diseases are easily
treated, often with a high success rate.
Compared to psychology, hypnosis is a short and effective
treatment. Results are almost immediate and the patient comments readily on his
relief.
Hypnosis is an underdeveloped, under-used form of
therapy. The work to be
done in this sector is enormous and the potential is extraordinary.
